Answers from Patty

Where do you live?
Palmer, Massachusetts (80 miles from Boston) in the part of the state that the politicians  only remember when they want help paying off the Big Dig or want our votes!

Do you have any hidden talents?
I have a wonderful sense of directions and can drive anywhere. If I get lost I just keeping taking left turns until I  get back on the right trail. Not sure if this is a hidden talent or not.

Name two things you consider yourself to be very good at.
Teaching children to realize their potential to become what ever they aspire to become. I'm pretty crafty too.

Name two things you consider yourself to be very bad at.
This is probably too much information but here it goes.... House work  I hate it so I'm not the best at it. No, my house is not as bad as those Hoarders  or Clean sweep shows. Its very lived in. (LOL) the  other thing I'm bad at is spelling I'm a terrible speller when I write any thing I always have either a spell checker or a dictionary within  easy reach.

Do you have any siblings? What are they like.
I have four siblings, two brothers and two sisters. I'm the second oldest, My older brother is very talented but has made terrible life  choices and has squandered much of his life. My youngest brother is very talented as well, he is a machinist and does things old school, a craft which is dying. He has Polysistic Kidney disease and is not well. He is currently rebuilding his 1969 Chevy Camaro  convertible and it looks awesome. My sister Judy is also my best friend ( she drove me nuts when we were kids), she is a long arm quilter, a grandma and very talented in her own right. She is petrified of mice, and not the bravest about traveling or driving places unlike me. My Youngest sister and the baby, Susan, is a free spirit and marches to her own drum.

Have you ever won a trophy?
I don't think so, and I'm sure I would remember something like  that.

Name one thing that not many people know about you.
I love to sing to my dogs. I was a closet  professional wrestler watcher in college.  Oops sorry that's two things
What is your earliest memory?
Standing at the grave of my grandfather watching them lowering him into the ground with ropes and trying to cry because my mother was. I don't know why this comes to mind but I know I was young.
It's not a bad memory I didn't get was was going on... did I mention I am Irish and Catholic? (LOL)

What was your favorite musical group when you were in Junior High?
Hey Hey We're the Monkeys! I know I'm dating myself.
What are you passionate about?
Teaching... I'm a  special education teacher and I'm love working with children who struggle and don't believe in themselves,  watching them gain confidence and helping them find what they are good a.t Watching them show the "smart " kids how to solve problems, or watching that moment when the light bulb goes off and they get it. I'm so passionate about it that I'm getting goose bumps just writing about it .  I'm also passionate about quilting and reading too.
Who is the person you respect the most and why?
My mother, she has had a lot of adversity in her life and never really had a childhood, she has taken care or a number of her family members when they've been terminally ill. She barely made it out of the fifth grade because of her family situation but managed to  raise  us and teach us that we can do any thing we put our mind to. She is/was a phenomenal quilter, unfortunately is going blind because she has macular degeneration. Despite the adversity in her life, she remains a strong positive person. I only hope that I am half the woman she is.

What outdoor activities do you enjoy?
Camping, hiking, the ocean, gardening.

If your house was on fire what three things would you grab before leaving?
Assuming that my husband and my son were already out and safe... my two dogs and my debit card, or car keys. I know that 's four things but I'm assuming the keys and debit card would be in close proximity.
What is your most favorite place on earth?
I like  my home but home is where you heart is right? So any place that my boy and his father are. But a specifically in the United States, my most favorite place is Monticello VA. Thomas Jefferson's home, my sister -in- law lives in Charlottesville and every time I go see her we have to go there. There  is something so beautiful and peaceful about that place.

(More than) a dozen questions

the other Patty says:
Where do you live?
On the Eastern plains of Colorado, in a sweet little town called Wray (pronounced ray), where I grew up, left and came home to 40+ years age.
Do you have any hidden talents?
Speed reading. People can't really tell unless they sit and watch you read the WHOLE book, and that's a lot like watching paint dry.

Name two things you consider yourself to be very good at.
Stubbornness- I'm going to master the computer if I have to pull every hair out to do it!. Throwing together a meal for a crowd on a moments notice.
Name two things you consider yourself to be very bad at.
Tossing the scraps from my quilt projects. I sew a lot of samples for the shop, and I bag up the leftovers in individual bags to use 'later'. I have baskets full of these bags. By September I am going to have tons!)
Quitting. As in 'it's time to go but I have three more entrys to make, or one more report to write, or one more row to hoe.....
Do you have any siblings? What are they like?
One sister, one brother, both younger. They are very much alike in looks, temperament, attitude, and I am the odd one out.
Have you ever won a trophy?
In high school I won a medal for poetry I had written.
In the fifteen years I've had my shop, I have twice won the Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year award, once the Dedicated Member award, once the Busy Bee award (see quitting, above) and last year we were named one of 25 Gifted Retailers by Gift and Home Dec Magazine, but those were all paper certificates, and I had to pay for my own framing, so............
Name one thing not many people know about you.
That I love poetry and rhyming. When I do Christmas tags I like to write little ditties about the person and the gift, and I like to make up my own songs. (Can't carry a tune for the life of me, so only in private)
What is your earliest memory?
Going to the milk barn with my Grandpa (at about age 2) to help milk the cows...
What was your favorite musical group in Jr High?
Never did see what all the fuss was about.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Well, first there was a farmer, and then a cowgirl, a nurse, an airline stewardess (afraid of heights and claustrophobic), an artist, a teacher, and a homemaker.  I married a farmer, raised 5 children, and own a quilt shop, so I guess I got most of it done.
What are you passoinate about?
I'm big into Breast Cancer Awareness, Comforts for Kids, and Babies. Well, and quilting! I'm making a quilt for breast cancer and I make about 30 quilts and pillowcases every year for Comforts for Kids, and we do a basket of goodies for the first baby of the year, as well as a gift for every baby born at our local hospital.

Who is the person you respect the most and why?
Debbie McGee. She grew up here and had a great many health issues all her life. She lost both of her legs as a young woman, and THEN gave birth to a little boy. She lived just up the street from my shop, and almost every day she would come by in her wheelchair, carrying her little guy in front of her. When he got older he walked along beside her. She passed away a few years ago, but she was an inspiration, and she left behind a wonderful young man.
What outdoor activities do you like to do?
I love to garden. I love to walk, and I can stand for the longest time just beathing the fresh air..
If your house were on fire and you could only grab three things before leaving, what would they be?
Probably the book I am currently reading, the quilt I am currently binding, and a phone to call the fire department. Only because they would all be in my lap when I headed for the door!

Which is your most favorite place on earth?
Long as I'm with my hubby, any place will do!

Introducing Hollie

Where do you live?

Just a few blocks from the beach in Venice, California

Do you have any hidden talents?

I used to be a singer but no one really knows I can sing anymore because I stopped singing in public.

Name two things you consider yourself to be very good at.

I’m stealing Jenny’s answers – sewing and cooking.

Name two things you consider yourself to be very bad at.

I am an awful artist. I can’t paint and I can’t draw even though I wish I could. And I am horrible at team sports. I’m a klutz. On the basketball team in Jr. High no one wanted to pass the ball to me… ever.

Do you have any siblings? What are they like?

My younger sister Kimberly is married to a retired baseball player and they have two little girls. She and my nieces recently moved from Phoenix, Arizona to Northern California to be closer to my parents and because they want to raise their girls up there. Her husband is a pitching coach for the Rookie Ball League and in the off-season he is able to be up north with Kim and the girls. Kimberly and I are very, very different. We were never really close growing up. She was popular and I was the weirdo. Now we have a much better relationship.

My baby brother, Grayson, lives in San Francisco but he’s thinking about moving down to Venice (Yea!) or San Diego around the beginning of the New Year. I secretly hope he picks Venice. Gray is a bar manager at a restaurant in the city and he’s still looking for the right girl. He’s young. He’s got time. Grayson and I have really become great friends in the past several years. There is a 7 year age gap so I was gone by the time he was coming into his own. We really enjoy each other and have a ton in common.

Have you ever won a trophy?

I used to ride horses competitively so I won a few ribbons back in the day. Do those count as trophies?

Name one thing that not many people know about you.

Well, outside of the Flickr and Blogosphere not many people know that I am as crafty as I am. I work a pretty stressful job and my friends see that side of me, but every so often I surprise one of them with a handmade gift or by wearing a dress I made and occasionally my secret leaks out.

What is your earliest memory?

Sunday mornings with my Grandpa Ray. Every Sunday morning my parents would take me over to my grandparent’s house. My Grandma Mary would disappear with my parents into the living room but my Grandpa Ray would have a chair set up in the front room waiting for me. He would hide jelly beans in his shirt pocket – the black ones separate from the other colors because I hated licorice – and he would read me the Sunday comics while I ate jellybeans. Peanuts was our favorite comic. He died when I was young and never lived to meet my sister or brother but he made a significant impact on my life. I even made a student film about it when I was in film school.

What was your favorite musical group when you were in Junior High?

I loved Prince, Madonna and Cyndi Lauper. I would put on my roller skates and skate around the garage to Purple Rain, Material Girl and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An actor. Musicals, Shakespeare, theatre – not a movie star. And I actually was a working actor for 20 years before I “retired” at the ripe old age of 26.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about my fiancĂ©, my friends, travel and photography. I usually include my job in that list but I am realizing that the stress it creates isn’t always worth it. I do love it though, most of the time.

Who is the person you respect the most, and why?

My father. He is the most decent and fair human being I have met. He lives his entire life to serve others.

What outdoor activities do you like to do?

Hiking, biking, running, camping, gardening, kayaking, skiing…

If your house was on fire and you could grab only 3 things before leaving, what would they be?

If my fiancé and our dog, Jack were safe then I would rescue my childhood teddy bear, blanket, and the external hard drive we use to back up all of our photos. I have had the bear and the blanket since the day I was born, though they live in my closet now.

Which is your most favorite place on this earth?

That’s a tough one. We love to travel. We work to travel, so we have been to some amazing places and it’s hard to pick just one. I love the beach, I really do. So anywhere there is a beach might top the list.

Introducing Gayly

What outdoor activities do you like to do?
Photography, biking, playing with my kids, hiking in the mountains

If your house was on fire and you could grab only 3 things before leaving, what would they be?
My Bible, my computer (all our pictures are on it) and my wedding ring (hopefully it would already be on my finger and I am assuming that my husband and children are already out of the house!)

Which is your most favorite place on this earth?
I love to be with my family, so where they are I love! But when it comes to places I have been and love... I love the mountains in spring time, evenings on the beach and China as it is the birth place of 2 of my children.

Love, Melissa

Bow Ties

This was a fun block to put together.  I think it is going to make a really cute quilt.

Introducing Jenny

Where do you live?
The gorgeous Texas Hill Country.

Do you have any hidden talents?
I can stand on an inner tube in the water! Hahaha! Okay that's just silly.

Name two things you consider yourself to be very good at.
Sewing and cooking.

Name two things you consider yourself to be very bad at.
HANDWRITING! Golly you should see my handwriting. Causes most people to gasp. Hmmm my husband would say organization but it's not that I am bad at it, I just don't have enough time in the day to take care of everything. Taking care of 4 people on 4 different schedules in 4 different locations(schools, work, and me at home) is so time consuming.  Hmmmm, Oh I know! Being patient. Lord you didn't just hear that! I don't need any more lessons in patience thank you very much! =D

Do you have any siblings? What are they like?
Kelly who does something taxish for Exxon. I don't really know! She is a lot of fun and takes us on great vacations. She also sews but not often she spends her weekends gardening and running.

Kim who works for a bank in the businessish realm doing something bankish. Don't really understand what she does either! She does not sew but has dabbled in creative endeavors here and there. She is really sweet and so so kind to my family.
Love them both!

Have you ever won a trophy?
I think a softball trophy. We went to state or something. I played in the outfield so the details are sketchy at best!

Name one thing that not many people know about you.
I dance and sing when I sew. =O

What is your earliest memory?
Playing endlessly with my neighbor who was a year and a half older than me. It was so awful when she went to Kindergarten. I would wait and wait all day for her to come home. Then I would help her with her homework so we could go outside and play.

What was your favorite musical group when you were in Junior High?
Giggling... I loved/love schmaltzy love songs. Neil Diamond and Lionel Richie! First concerts ever, parental units in tow. Okay so stop laughing already!!!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A wife and a mommy.

What are you passionate about?
My faith, my children and their education, my husband, serving in my community, sewing and chocolate.

Who is the person you respect the most, and why?
Jesus of course. Then my husband.

What outdoor activities do you like to do?
Swimming, walking, running and riding bikes with my kids.

If your house was on fire and you could grab only 3 things before leaving, what would they be?
My son, my daughter and my husband. I can replace everything else. But golly I would cry at all the fabric being lost! Gasp!

Which is your most favorite place on this earth?
Where ever my family is at the moment. No place is special without them.

I was 4 and my brother was 5, it was his first day of kindergarten.  I was watching out the window of him getting on the bus.  The bus drove away with him and I just sat in the floor and cried.  I can remember the baby sitter asking me what was wrong and I said "I'm going to miss him".

Introducing Tamera

Where do you live?

outside Kintyre, North Dakota (but I lived in Colby from 6th grade until college!)

Do you have any hidden talents?

I don't think I have any hidden talents.  I'm one of those people who likes everyone to know what I'm good at, lol.

Name two things you consider yourself to be very good at.
Quilting and teaching.

Name two things you consider yourself to be very bad at.

Organization and follow through...I have great ideas, sometimes, I struggle with the follow through.  I'm getting much better.  I try and work on it diligently.

Do you have any siblings? What are they like?
Robin--she's my hero.  She raised four wonderful kids as a single mom.
Nancy--she's the artist.  She teaches kids art and pottery.
David--has made some bad decisions, but loves God and has put his life back together as much as possible.
Have you ever won a trophy?

no trophies, but I did win awards for piano competitions when I was in school

Name one thing that not many people know about you.

I was really quite shy growing up...actually more self-conscious, I guess.  People who know me now don't really believe me.  I've done a lot of things that would seem to require a lot of self confidence, like becoming a doctor, quitting to stay home with my kids, homeschooling, etc.

What is your earliest memory?
I am SO bad about memories!  I usually have to ask my sisters if things really happened that way, or did I dream them.

What was your favorite musical group when you were in Junior High?
I don't remember my favorite musical group, but I listened to country music, lol.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a pastor's wife and have a dozen kids

What are you passionate about?

donation quilts, homeschooling my kids, mentoring women and helping them grow spiritually

Who is the person you respect the most, and why?

Jesus Christ is a great answer.  I also respect my best friend Jolene.  She loves her boys more than life itself and is passionate about becoming a better Christian, wife, and mother.

What outdoor activities do you like to do?

I like taking care of my animals.  I raise dairy goats and I have chickens.

If your house was on fire and you could grab only 3 things before leaving, what would they be?
(yes, assuming we're only talking about things) my computer, my Bernina, and my purse

Which is your most favorite place on this earth?
A fictional place in my mind, actually.  It's this beautiful cabin high in the mountains with a huge wall of windows looking out on the scenery.  It's where I go when I'm stressed.

I wanted to take this time to let you ladies know how much I appreciate being a part of this group.  I'm really looking forward to getting to know you, and helping to do some wonderful charity projects this coming year.  I really have a passion for doing donation quilts and this seems like a great way to get involved with great quilters all over the country!

Introducing Melissa

Here's a questionnaire for everyone continuing or starting our group. Just copy the questions and make a new post.

Where do you live?
Colby, Kansas

Do you have any hidden talents?

Hmm. I'm awfully good at interior decorating. Is that hidden???

Name two things you consider yourself to be very good at.
Sewing and thinking up ideas.

Name two things you consider yourself to be very bad at.
Anything involving knowing what direction you're going. (Christy, no need to elaborate here.)
Most sports.

Do you have any siblings? What are they like?
Christy -- she's awesome. She's in our group and loves to sew too!
Ryan -- my brother who has four, yes four children. One is 10, one 5, one 3 and one 2. (I think!)
Julie -- my other sister who is equally awesome but not so much into crafts and sewing. She's an eye doctor which comes in so handy!
Kyle -- my sweet brother who lives clear in Philadephia, PA. I miss him! I used to make him bottles of chocolate milk and lay down with him until he went to sleep at night.
Wyatt -- the youngest, still in college, what can I say? Wilder than the rest of us but so likeable. Lots and lots of friends. We always say he could be president.
Have you ever won a trophy?

Maybe for a speech or something. Definitely not sports. Except my husband gave me a tennis trophy that said I Love You on the bottom. (how sweet!)

Name one thing that not many people know about you.
I'm actually pretty shy. And I sing solos at my church. I know, they don't go together.

What is your earliest memory?
I remember being two and peeing on my dad's dress pants as he was eating breakfast before school. (He's a teacher.) He was really mad and I had to wear diapers again! Funny what you remember.

What was your favorite musical group when you were in Junior High?
Probably MC Hammer. Be honest, Christy.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
a ballerina. I won a poster contest for drawing myself as one in first grade.
What are you passionate about?

art. Especially in schools. I am currently teaching it (for free) for our local Christian School. And also music (which I definitely cannot teach), PE (yeah not that either), recess, ag, home-ec, and all those other "non-essential" classes. Also 4-H and preserving the arts for future generations.

Who is the person you respect the most, and why?

Jesus Christ, because, hello, he is the way, the truth and the life.

What outdoor activities do you like to do?

Play tennis, have picnics, hike in the mountains, ride my bike, run.

If your house was on fire and you could grab only 3 things before leaving, what would they be?
Easy. Anna, Nathan and Emilie. Hopefully my husband can get himself out. But if it's not including people, then the kids photo albums, my sewing machine and my pillow which took forever to find.

Which is your most favorite place on this earth?
I'll probably go with my hometown of Bogue, Kansas. It is so little and so peaceful.

July: Melissa
August: Tamera
September: Patty Z.

Welcome to our new members: Patty Z., Leisel, Jenny F., Tamera and Hollie. Let's do another introduction exercise. I'll get it started in a bit.

A couple of ground rules. This year the person in charge of the month decides on the project we will make. It doesn't need to be a quilt block. The same person decides on a charity or donation project. (such as Anna Maria's block challenge)

The project is to be posted on the first of the month and finished by the end of the month. Let's try really hard not to drag it out this year. And then we will each mail it where it is supposed to go, whether it is to the charity or to the person in charge of the month. If specific fabrics are necessary, the person in charge of the month may need to mail each of us those fabrics.

New ladies, I will add you as authors of this blog as I remove those leaving our group. That will be done as their project for this month is completed. In the meantime, please "follow" the blog so you can keep up with what's going on.

I guess that's it! Can't wait to see what you come up with for us to do first, Christy.
Love, Melissa

September Block for Tonya

mini bow tie

I love this block and even love that it looks like 1930's repro fabrics used in it.
This is the block I choose for you all to create for me.
This block will finish 12"

I love 1930's reproduction fabrics
if you are not sure what that is, you can google it and get tons of examples.

Thanks and I'm looking forward to everyone's block.
